JECOREY ARTHUR DAY 2020
On this day last year, Louisville Metro Government honored the 2019 BMe Genius Fellows by giving us a day. In honor of Jecorey Arthur Day 2020 I am asking Louisvillians to do the following.
EDUCATE
learn something new today!
1. read about the Jim Crow laws of Kentucky that devastated the black population after slavery was supposed to end
2. watch Dr. Blaine Hudson tour black history sites in Louisville, KY
3. listen to Chase Dean sing ‘Change Is Gonna Come’
ACTIVATE
perform an action today!
1. serve a black nonprofit by signing up to volunteer with Metro United Way
2. join the Simmons Is Me campaign with small weekly or monthly giving to our city’s HBCU
3. help Chase Dean get through college
AGITATE
campaign for justice today!
1. challenge 5 friends to serve and don’t stop until they do
2. challenge 5 friends to join and don’t stop until they do
3. challenge 5 friends to help and don’t stop until they do
These items are all connected to the black struggle in our city. The century and a half of slavery locked us down but because we experienced Jim Crow (separate and unequal laws) we were locked out. This is why our HBCU struggles. This is why Chase struggles. This is why we struggle. The city of Louisville must atone for the way it has neglected and negated its black population.
For clarification, all mentions of "black" people are referencing African Americans, or American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS), who have generations of blood, sweat, and tear equity in the United States of America. Our lineage is chattel slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, mass incarceration, police terrorism, and much more. ADOS built this country but to this day lives on the bottom of it.
